Fearghus mac Cailin – Order of the Maunche

While I was happy to take on this assignment and work with Meara again, I completely dropped the ball on documenting the scroll. I tried to branch out on the flourishes for the illumination. I did have fun hiding the various games referenced on Fearghus’s blog within the illumination, especially the Snakes and Ladders, which really called out to me as it was the precursor to Shoots and Ladders, which I used to play with my dad as a kid.

Words by Meara MacNeil

By the roll of the dice and a flick of his hands
The one known as Fearghus brings fun and games across these lands
Whether teaching games to all he knows
Or learning the rules seldom told
Fergus the game master teaches both the brave and not so bold.
But more than games his story holds,
For he challenges others with words to behold
“Try Arts and Sciences” he tells his fellow fighters
And lo the unbelts took up this challenge and thus were made might mightier
So on this day upon the Pennsic field
Do we Ryouko’jin Saisei, Demon-King of the Three Heavens and
Maharani Indrakshi, Horned Queen of the Night Sky
Hold aloft an award for all to witness by
We cast these dice and, we heard the order’s cry
A Maunche we make him,
The order now more complete
And more games do we expect that he will teach
So that all may now learn how to compete
Done by our hands in this AS 52
Below skies of red and nights of midnight blue.
